The MLS 2027 Calendar Change, Explained: Sprint Season, Summer Kickoff, Winter Break
MLS is moving to a summer-to-spring calendar. 2026 is the last calendar-year season, a 14-game sprint season runs February to May 2027, and the first summer-to-spring season kicks off in July 2027.
The MLS Board of Governors voted in November 2025 to line the league calendar up with the rest of the world. 2026 is the last February-to-December season. A 14-game "sprint" season fills February to May 2027, and the first full summer-to-spring season starts in July 2027, with a winter break and a May 2028 MLS Cup.
This page tracks what the league has confirmed and flags what is still only reported.

Why MLS is doing this
The league's stated reasons: international windows and transfer windows stop landing mid-season, MLS becomes a better selling league during the European summer window, and the playoffs stop competing with the NFL and college football in the fall. The 2026 World Cup, which forced a seven-week pause in the middle of this season, made the case in public.
What is still unconfirmed
Reporting says the 2027-28 season will use one table with five geographic divisions of six teams. The league has not published the alignment, so treat it as likely rather than final.
A proposal for a 20-team playoff, with double elimination for the top eight and a play-in for the bottom eight, was reported in August 2026. It has not been announced.
The 2027 transfer windows have not been published. Expect a summer primary window. The All-Star Game and Leagues Cup timing under the new calendar are also open.
What it means for the Sounders
The 2026-27 offseason is short. Option decisions and re-entry drafts still happen in December, but the transition season starts in February, and the preseason for the July 2027 kickoff comes in June. Any coaching or roster reset happens against two clocks. Seattle also gets a winter home schedule for the first time from December 2027, with matches at Lumen Field in late November and early December before the break.
